Maharishi Ayurveda Aroma Therapy

  • Edmund Rice Centre 7 Amberley Way Lower Plenty, VIC, 3093 Australia (map)

The use of aromas as a therapy is based on the principles of Maharishi AyurVeda, where optimal health is achieved through bringing balance to the three fundamental forces of Nature’s functioning (called DoshasVataPitta and Kapha).

The Doshas are combinations of the five elements (space, air, fire, water, and earth) which make up our entire physiology as well as the world around us.

The essential oil of a plant is the essence or life force of the plant, and is present in all its parts: flowers, fruit, leaves, root, bark, and resin. The oils are extracted by steam distillation, solvent extraction, or cold expression. To experience optimal therapeutic benefit, it is important to use only the highest quality, pure, organic or wild-crafted essential oils.

How Essential Oils Work

Essential oils work through the sense of smell which operates in the ten-million olfactory nerve cells at the root of our nose. In smelling a fragrance, the odour is transmitted directly to the brain’s limbic system — the seat of our emotions, behaviour and memory. The fragrance stimulates the release of neurotransmitters such as serotonin, endorphins, and enkephalines, which evoke feelings of happiness and well-being.

Properties of Essential Oils

Each essential oil has a wide range of properties and ways that it can be used. The one essential oil can stimulate certain systems of the body while relaxing others due to its complex chemical structure.

Essential oils enliven the body’s healing mechanisms and restore wholeness to body, mind and emotions. There are many hundreds of research studies documenting the benefits of essential oils for health and well-being.

Lavender Highland, for example, has a sweet floral aroma. It is calming, relaxing and uplifting, and great for a restful sleep.

There are innumerable possibilities to enhance your physical, mental and emotional well-being with Maharishi Aromatherapy in an easy and profound way.
